Grade 3 Science Resources-BUGS!
Subject: Science Grade: 3
GLO: Students will describe the appearances and life cycles of some common animals, and identify their adaptations to different environments.
SLO: Students will classify a variety of animals, based on observable characteristics; e.g., limbs, teeth, body covering, overall shape, backbone.
GLO-ICT: Students will access, use and communicate information from a variety of technologies
SLO-ICT: (C1) Students will access and retrieve appropriate information from electronic sources for a specific inquiry.
Activity:
- Students will be given the Insects worksheet where they will fill out the first column about what they know about insects and what they would like to know.
- Class discussion where students will share what they know about insects.
- Watch video about the similarities and differences between different kinds of insects.
- Students will fill out the middle column on their worksheet: What I have learned.
- Students will then use laptops to research any questions about insects that were not answered by the video. If students do not have any more questions, they can pick their favorite insect and find out some facts about it.
This activity is enhanced by computer integration by using the video to show students the difference between all kinds of insects. The video allows to students to get a visual of the information being taught rather than relying solely on their imaginations or pictures. Video brings the subject area to life for the students. Also, by using laptops (or desktops), students will utilize their internet search skills by looking for any questions that were not answered by the video.

Powerpoint Presentation
5 Features of an Effective Presentation:
1.Make it BIG-writing needs to be big enough to be able to see from 6 feet away from the computer
2. Make it SIMPLE- use easily readable fonts and simple color schemes
3. Make it CLEAR- focus on the main points and don't use too many pictures and words
4. Be CONSISTENT-follow the same color scheme throughout the presentation as well as font and size
5. Use appropriate PICTURES that promote thinking about the topic, rather than distract.
My presentation follows these guidelines by:

5. Use appropriate PICTURES that promote thinking about the topic, rather than distract.
My presentation follows these guidelines by:
- Using very large font so the viewers can see from a distance
- Using appropriate pictures that relate to the topic
- Using the least amount of text possible and keeping slides concise

Blogs and Education
Reading the articles for this week was very interesting for me and quite surprising. Because new technology tends to bring out the anxiety in me, I wasn't over-enthusiastic about the idea of blogging. However, I found that the use of blogging in the classroom can be incredibly effective. I clicked on one blog of a math teacher's class. There, students were able to ask questions freely, find assignments, and have discussions with other students in a productive learning environment. One of the aspects of blogging that really stood out to me was the fact that blogs promote an equal learning environment. In a classroom, the students most likely to answer a question given by the teacher are those who are more comfortable speaking in front of their classmates, while those who are more shy have a harder time being actively involved in classroom discussion. Blogging on the other hand, allows those students to become involved without the pressure of having to speak in front of the class or being put on the spot.
The importance of technology in education today cannot be ignored. I think that students need to be able to be taught 21st Centuy skills at school through specific lessons as well as through modelling. Blogs are a way in which students are able to use their writing skills, proactive thinking skills (in finding sources), and internet management skills.

Introduction
Hi, I'm Carly. I grew up in Cardston, Alberta and now live in Lethbridge. I enjoy anything outdoors, specifically camping, downhill skiing, boating, hiking, and swimming. My husband and I plan on doing the West Coast Trail next summer!
